Step

First blood sample, questionnaire & information

You arrive early in the morning on an empty stomach for the first blood sample. Ideally, you should bring the completed „Menopause“ questionnaire for women or men with you to this appointment. This will allow us to gather important information about possible symptoms and your medical history in advance. Dr. Bernhardt can then tailor the further course of hormone therapy optimally to your needs. You can take the medication prescribed by your GP as usual, including hormones if you have received any from the gynecology or andrology department.

Medical evaluation & advice

In a later, detailed consultation, Dr. Bernhardt will discuss the contents of your questionnaire with you and take your personal medical history. He will explain the laboratory values to you, in particular the hormone values that are important for hormone therapy. What significance do the values have for your well-being? Where are there any deviations? Dr. Bernhardt will give you recommendations for targeted hormone balancing („hormone balance“). You will receive an individual consultation that precisely addresses your personal symptoms.

Individual recipe

After the initial consultation, Dr. Bernhardt will prepare an individual prescription for you if necessary. This will be sent to the specialized pharmacy Vitaluce in Hochdorf by e-mail on the same day, together with a data sheet. The specialists there produce your bioidentical hormones individually and freshly from yam extracts. After around 5 to 7 working days, you will receive the preparations discreetly delivered to your home.

Step

Start of therapy & appointment

On the day your new bioidentical hormones arrive, contact us by telephone. Together we will arrange a second appointment for a blood sample - exactly one month after starting the bioidentical hormone therapy. At this appointment, we will measure your current hormone levels so that we can check the effectiveness of the therapy and fine-tune it if necessary. The extensive metabolic values from the first analysis are usually not taken again, or only checked if necessary.

Regular checks

At the start of treatment, check-ups are carried out every few months. Close monitoring of your hormone levels is necessary until both your experienced hormone specialist, Dr. Andreas Bernhardt, and you yourself are completely satisfied with the results. This means: you as the patient with your condition and your specialist with the hormone levels. Only then will we extend the intervals between check-ups to every six months in order to continue to monitor the therapy safely and reliably.

FAQ on procedure and control

For a meaningful hormone analysis, please come to the blood test in the morning on an empty stomach. Be sure to take your new hormones that morning and ideally come between 7 and 9 a.m., as hormones fluctuate with the time of day, which we want to map in a standardized way. Please avoid large meals, sugary or fatty drinks as well as stress or physical exertion shortly before the collection the day before. The puncture site is hygienically disinfected and your blood analyses are couriered to the Bioanalytica laboratory on the same morning. This is how we guarantee the best possible laboratory results.
Dr. Bernhardt evaluates your laboratory values and clinical symptoms and adjusts the dosage of bioidentical hormones accordingly. After the first intake, a blood test is carried out after about a month to check the effect and optimize the dosage if necessary. The therapy is adjusted until your hormone levels are stable and your symptoms are significantly alleviated or - ideally - have disappeared.
The duration of therapy depends on individual factors, including the causes of the hormone disorder, the response to treatment, lifestyle and concomitant illnesses. Some patients only need short-term therapy to bridge the gap, others need to take bioidentical hormones for a longer period of time. However, most patients want to continue taking them into old age due to their good tolerability and noticeable effect.
Approximately one month after the start of therapy, a second blood sample is taken to monitor the effect of the bioidentical hormones. We measure the most important deviating hormone values again and compare them with the initial values. This test is used to fine-tune the hormone dosage and to identify possible side effects.
In an initial phase, the treating doctor monitors the effectiveness of the treatment by carrying out regular blood tests at intervals of 2 to 3 months until the hormones stabilize. In addition, your individual symptoms will be assessed in a personal consultation. Once a stable hormone status has been achieved, six-monthly checks are recommended to ensure a permanent balance.
